Groundbreaking Ceremony Scheduled for New SpringHill Suites Hotel in Leeds
SpringHill Suites by Marriott photo is a prototype and an example of what the new hotel at Leeds will look like.
A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, January 16 at 10:00 am to celebrate the start of construction on a new SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Leeds, Alabama. The hotel will be developed and managed by Jackson Hospitality Services and will be located next to the existing Hampton Inn off Rex Lake Road.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held indoors at the Hampton Inn located at 310 Rex Lake Road.
“We are thrilled to welcome SpringHill Suites to Leeds,” said Mayor David Miller. “This new hotel will be a significant addition to our growing community, offering a modern and comfortable stay option for visitors and business travelers. It will also create new jobs and contribute to the local economy.”
Cory Jackson Jr., President of Jackson Hospitality Services, expressed excitement about bringing the SpringHill Suites brand to Leeds. “This hotel will offer guests a comfortable and convenient stay experience with all the amenities they need, including spacious suites, free breakfast, and a fitness center.”
The SpringHill Suites Leeds is expected to open in 2026 and will feature 115 guest rooms, a spacious lobby, and a full-service bar. The lobby décor will display a Formula One race car on loan from the neighboring Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum.

Leeds City Schools invites you to join us for the much anticipated Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Homer Smiles Stadium Project on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at 9:00 am.
Winter Weather Notice
Extremely cold weather is expected for several consecutive days and possible winter precipitation so we ask that you take safety precautions for yourself, your family and your home or business.
Please note:
- Public Works Trucks and Equipment are ready for bad weather
- Sand will be added to roadways and bridges, as needed
- DO NOT PASS our equipment, unless instructed to do so
The City of Leeds wishes you the best throughout this winter season!
Building Safety Tips for Cold Weather
- Maintain a Consistent Indoor Temperature:
- Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (13°C) during cold spells, even if you are not home.
- Avoid setting your thermostat lower during the day or night, as this can cause pipes to freeze and burst.
- Seal Gaps and Cracks:
- Inspect windows and doors for drafts and seal any gaps with weatherstripping or caulking to keep the cold air out.
- Ensure attic vents are properly sealed to prevent cold air from entering the house.
- Check Heating Systems:
- Ensure that your heating system is running properly before the cold weather arrives.
- Have your furnace or heating unit serviced by a professional at least once a year.
- Change filters regularly to maintain air circulation.
- Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
- If using space heaters or gas-powered heating systems, install carbon monoxide detectors near bedrooms and in areas with potential for carbon monoxide buildup.
Plumbing Safety Tips for Cold Weather
- Insulate Pipes:
- Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, and garages.
- Use foam pipe insulation or heat tape to protect pipes vulnerable to freezing.
- Let Faucets Drip:
- During prolonged cold spells, allow faucets connected to pipes in unheated or exterior walls to drip slowly to prevent freezing.
- Open Cabinet Doors:
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, especially if sinks are on exterior walls, to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
- Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses:
- Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor faucets and drain them before the weather gets too cold to prevent freezing.
- Know How to Shut Off Water:
- Know where your main water shut-off valve is located, in case a pipe bursts. Keep a wrench nearby for emergencies.
- Check for Ice Dams:
- Regularly inspect your roof for ice dams, as water buildup behind ice can lead to leaks in the ceiling and walls.
- Keep gutters clear of debris to allow proper water flow.

Leeds City Schools Winter Weather Update: LCS will have a regular day of school and after-school activities on Thursday 1/9/25. LCS will be closed Friday 1/10/25. All after-school activities for 1/10/25 are also canceled. Stay Warm!
Leeds Elementary School
LES Parents
On Thursday, January 16th, Leeds Elementary will participate in an INTRUDER AND EVACUATION DRILL. Most students in the building will participate in the traditional intruder drill that we do several times each year, but a few classes in the fourth and fifth grades will also participate in the evacuation portion of the drill. This drill will be done in cooperation with the Leeds Police Department to help us identify potential challenges that can be addressed. We will have an increased presence of police on our campus during this time as part of the drill. Once again, this is a DRILL so there is no need for concern! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
Pre-K Registration | Leeds Primary School
Pre-K Registration will go live for the 2025-26 school year on January 15th. You must turn 4 on or before September 1st to qualify for an OSR Pre-K classroom. More information can be found on the state website.
Leeds Trails and Tours

Happy New Year!! Who has made a reading goal? Is it a certain number? Is it completing a challenge like the one posted below? Comment what your reading goals are for this year and remember- any amount is great! Don’t compare yourself to others- we are all different. This past year I had a goal of 150. The year before I had read 161. But I quickly realized that starting the store I wouldn’t be able to complete my goal, so I lowered it to 100. Well, I didn’t make it. Your local church, civic organization, club, or one of our neighborhood captains may allow you to drop off donations for Leeds Outreach clients at their location. You can leave bags on the tables in the loading bay at the rear of the Leeds Civic Center 24 hrs. a day, 7 days a week.
