GREENWAVE GREATNESS. That’s the name of the series we are starting this school year to recognize LCS employees who go above and beyond to make this place special. Today we’re kicking off the series with a Back to School special I’d like to call “Officer Kavli saves the day!” Meet Turner. Turner is a 3rd grader at LES. And like everyone else, Turner is dealing with a lot of change during August! A new grade, a new teacher, new friends… you can see how Turner could forget what bus he rides, he has a lot on his mind! At the end of her route one day last week, Mrs. Shepherd realized she still had a child on her bus, a child she didn’t know! Turner followed a friend, hopped on the wrong bus (by mistake), and got a nice tour of another side of Leeds he wasn’t used to seeing from his school bus. Enter Leeds Elementary School, School Resource Officer, Evan Kavli. Even though the school day was done, when he heard about the predicament, he dropped what he was doing and went to get Turner from Mrs. Shepherd’s bus. Not only that, Officer Kavli took Turner all of the way home in the SRO truck. Today Turner got to tell Officer Kavli a special “thank you” for getting him home with a "Greenwave Greatness" sticker. Congrats to our AP Teachers who were recognized for their students’ outstanding performance on last year’s AP Exam. 121 passing scores were achieved at LHS last year! Great job teachers and students!
Leeds Trails & Tours Kick-Off Meeting
The Leeds Trails & Tours committee has officially begun its preparations for the much-anticipated April 2025 Walking Tour, kicking off the process with their first planning meeting of the season on Tuesday. This dedicated team, composed of community leaders and volunteers, is already hard at work crafting an unforgettable downtown walking tour that will transport visitors back to the iconic 1950s era in the City of Leeds.
This year’s planning committee is committed to bringing history to life. Among those who attended the kick-off meeting were Randy Ray, Ron Howard, Ken Nelms, Linda Miller, Mike Cauble, Victoria Boyce, Debbie Childers, Judy Ray, Janet Holt, Donna Jones, Dona Bonnett, and Jacob Meyer. Under the continued leadership of Chairman Randy Ray, Vice-Chair Ken Nelms, Secretary Jacob Meyer, and Treasurer Linda Miller, the team is poised to deliver an exceptional experience. New to the team this year, Ron Howard is stepping in to lead the walk, bringing fresh energy and ideas to the event.
The committee is calling on the community to get involved and be a part of this extraordinary event. Whether you have a passion for history, a knack for organization, or simply want to contribute to a beloved local tradition, there are numerous ways to volunteer your time, talent, and resources. Last year’s event saw over 75 re-enactors in full costume take to the streets of Leeds, vividly portraying life in 1940. This year, the committee is excited to brainstorm and bring even more creativity to the table, all while continuing efforts to develop self-guided tours based on the past two walking tours, ensuring that the rich history of Leeds is accessible to visitors year-round.
The work of the Leeds Trails & Tours committee is divided among various teams, each focusing on different aspects of the event. Whether your interests lie in historical research, marketing and publicity, portraying a historical figure, guiding tours, or working behind the scenes, there is a place for you to contribute. Community service hours can also be utilized as part of this volunteer opportunity, making it a great way to give back while engaging with the local history.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 12, 2025, with a rain date set for April 26, 2025. This is an event you won’t want to miss! The next planning meeting is scheduled for 4:00 pm on Tuesday, September 17, at Leeds Jane Culbreth Library. Local business leaders gathered at Mango's Cantina & Grill this week for the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce Corporate Ambassador meeting! This monthly meeting is a fabulous perk of chamber membership, offering local businesses a prime opportunity to connect, collaborate, and grow together. Meal Sponsors Needed | Leeds Band Boosters
The Leeds High School Band Boosters has approximately 50% of their meals sponsored for the band. This non-profit organization will need 10 meals to cover the regular football and competition season and we are still looking for sponsors.
We provide drinks, an entree, dessert and a side for 120 people for every game and competition. It is important to feed our band students before away games and competitions. Band students go directly from school to away game preparations so they do not go home and eat. Band Boosters feed them so they have fuel for the game. For competitions, band students have a long day of practice, travel, and performance so these students must have fuel to represent Leeds well. Meal sponsors are also needed for away games during the playoffs, but we don't have those dates yet.
Meals may be sponsored by providing money (and the Band Boosters will order and prepare the meal) or by bringing the meal to the band. More than one person, business, or group can sponsor a meal to share the cost. Sponsors are publicly thanked on our Facebook page and the Band app (for band parents and students).
