Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce Luncheon
Leeds City Schools Superintendent, John Moore, was the guest speaker for the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce August luncheon. Moore shared school district highlights that include 92 passing AP score, 13 AP course offerings, dual enrollment courses through Jefferson State Community College, Health Sciences program, Academy of Craft Training, Summer Literacy and Numeracy programs, LHS Football: 2023 5A Region 6 Champions, LHS & LMS Bands: 2023 Superior ratings at state performances, new ELA and math curriculum, interactive panels placed in the lunchroom for announcements, reading and math interventionists for grades K through 5, 8 first class pre-k classrooms, instructional gains based on ACAP and ACT assessment data, new cameras at LPS with facial recognition, new WIFI at LES and LPS with LMS and LHS to be added this fall, school enrollment is now online beginning this fall and interactive screens in all classrooms. Accomplishments of the Fine Arts that include music, band, choir, theatre arts and visual arts: Award winning marching, symphonic and jazz band programs, show choir, full theatre productions of Shakespearean plays and contemporary musicals, completion of community mural in downtown Leeds by LHS art students and local, regional and state art shows. It’s quite a resume and just a snapshot of the many accomplishments. We appreciate our Superintendent and his team for all of their hard work each year! The City Continues with Improvement Projects
City of Leeds Improvements
Mayor Miller, along with Leeds Jane Culbreth Library Director and Library Chairperson, Patrick Sessions, and Linda Miller, observe the library exterior wall that was just repaired and painted in preparation for a new mural. The existing mural was applied years ago with the wrong type of paint so it had begun to erode the mortar in the brick. That has now been repaired and the exterior painted. The mayor was quoted as saying, “Leeds is becoming known for its many murals. Unfortunately, we had to remove the one from the library wall recently when it was found that the paint used was of a latex formula that attacked the underlying brick-and-mortar. After repainting the base with the proper paint, we are now ready to replace the old mural with one appropriate for the location. We welcome suggestions from the public as to the replacement theme.” Leeds Jane Culbreth Library is located at 8104 Parkway Drive.
CITY CONTINUES WITH MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR PAVING AND INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM: Mayor Miller observes paving on first avenue as part of the City's on-going paving and infrastructure improvement program. This year's paving project, costing approximately $1.6 million, is the latest in a series of roadway, drainage and access improvements which are designed to improve the quality of life in Leeds. Mayor Miller was quoted as saying "Our administration has paved more miles of roadway than any in Leeds' history and this, coupled with our drainage improvement program and the downtown sidewalk, lighting and signalization program we are about to begin in partnership with ALDOT and the State will significantly change our City for the better."

The City of Leeds adopted Resolution 2023-08-08 for the Transportation Plan – Rebuild Alabama Act to enable the city to receive funds through this program. Pursuant to the guidelines, the city will come up with a plan and how the money will be spent. This grant is $158k and the city already has a Highway 78 widening project that is perfect for this grant to qualify for those funds. See copy of resolution below:

Event: Kids Acting Class for Grades 1st-12th grades - every Tuesday night at 5:30-6:30pm - just started back. Details: We have a couple of spots left and are doing a show called "Christmas Shorts" at the end of the class. We have 20 kids of all ages and the kids are learning a lot with theater. We are focused on comedy skills this semester. We will be accepting kids up to the start of October or until we hit 25 kids.
