Mayor David Miller declares July 7, 2025 as Emma Terry Day in the City of Leeds with a proclamation at the Council Meeting on Monday night in celebration of the newly awarded title of Miss Alabama 2025 to Miss Terry. From the entire City of Leeds, we congratulate you on all of your accomplishments!

WHEREAS: Miss Emma Terry has been a stellar citizen of the City of Leeds winning many titles and bringing positive recognition to the City over an extended period of time, and;
WHEREAS: Through her many public roles, especially her numerous activities supporting and raising awareness for ALS through public events, service as ALS Association Alabama Walk Team Leader and;
WHEREAS: She has achieved the pinnacle in the Miss Alabama Scholarship program through her being crowned Miss Alabama 2025 and;
WHEREAS: As Miss Alabama 2025 she will represent the entire State of Alabama both within the state and throughout the nation and;
WHEREAS: It is the desire of the Mayor and Council of the City of Leeds to once again formally recognize her high achievements and wish her good luck and Godspeed as she continues in her public career and reign as Miss Alabama; we

What’s behind the naming of Charles Barkley Avenue and Court in Leeds?

Here is something that will bring a smile to your face. Turn into Leeds Middle School, which is where the former high school once stood, you will see a familiar name on a street sign — Charles Barkley Ct.
Fun Fact: Charles Barkley, the town of Leeds most famous hometown hero, has two local streets named after him.
One by the before mentioned Middle School and the other — Charles Barkley Avenue — near Moton Park in Leeds.
In addition to the streets, there is also a statue of the Auburn Basketball All-American and NBA Hall of Famer in front of Leeds High School.
Charles Barkley has not forgotten Leeds. Annually, “Sir Charles” provides scholarships to graduating seniors at Leeds High School.
During the pandemic, he gave each Leeds City School employee $1000. Recently, he donated $1 million to address blight and fix homes in the town of nearly 12,500 people.
Leeds Mayor David Miller, who supported naming the streets after Barkley over the years, told Bham Now what makes him a hometown hero.
“The City of Leeds holds Charles Barkley in high esteem because he represents more than basketball greatness. The City has gained international recognition through his achievements, but his dedication to this community along with his humility and charitable nature are what make him a true local hero. Charles is REAL to the people of Leeds and we see him as a true symbol who embodies the values of Leeds through his dedication and his heart and his hometown pride.

Today, the Leeds Police Department and Leeds Fire & Rescue conducted active shooter training at The Shops of Grand River. This critical training equips our Officers and Firefighters with the skills and preparedness needed to respond effectively to active threat incidents, enhancing community safety. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the teachers from Leeds City Schools for their invaluable participation as role players and to The Shops of Grand River for generously providing the venue for this essential training.

Musical Monday classes for 2025/2026 | Leeds Arts Council
Good morning! Some parents have asked how to register for Elf Jr, our Fall Musical Mondays show. You can go to leedsartscouncil.org/store. Click the classes link. You will see a link for Elf and Frozen, which is the Winter semester show. Classes begin on August 11th! After winter break, we will resume classes and travel to Arundale and experience Frozen Jr with Elsa and friends! Classes begin on January 5th. Our goal at Leeds Arts Council is to make theatre accessible to all students. SBTC Disaster Relief and Texans on Mission Disaster Relief teams are already making a difference in response to Central Texas floods! Volunteers are feeding survivors and first responders with mobile kitchens. Others are setting up shower and laundry services. Mudout units have been deployed to clean homes. An incident management team, chaplains, and assessors are working to meet physical and spiritual needs in these hurting communities. We’re so thankful for all of these SBC Disaster Relief volunteers. Keep praying for them as they serve as the hands and feet of Jesus!
