Leeds Mayor David Miller Announces Major Exit 140 Economic Development Project!

2018-12-13 - Sports Park (1)_600

As the Mayor of Leeds, Alabama, I am excited and proud to announce that through the efforts of the Leeds City Council and the Leeds Economic Team, consisting of myself, Lee Barnes, Laura Barnes, Johnny Brunson, Scott Barnett, Brad Watson, Advisor Charlie Waldrep, and partners Jefferson County, Sports Illustrated, RSA (Retirement Systems of Alabama), and USX (United States Steel), the City has approved an agreement to transform Exit 140.
This transformation will include:
- A regional sports park drawing thousands of visitors to our city.
- A hospitality component consisting of three new hotels with over 400 rooms.
- A water feature known as the Crystal Lagoon, featuring a beach and approximately three to four acres of lagoon.
- A bridge that will open up thousands of acres for a master plan residential development.
- A retail component that will be owned and marketed by the RSA (Retirement Systems of Alabama).
With the cooperation of all these entities, this project will transform this area of Leeds into a destination for families from across the Southeast. This project will add to the quality of life of our existing residents by generating tax dollars and revenue for our school system and projects that will benefit our entire city.
This will enable the city to create a platform for the restaurants and retail establishments we have always desired. The success of this project relies on the cooperation of all partners working together.
I am thankful for all those partners who have given countless hours and efforts toward the success of this project.
David Miller, Mayor

Leeds Introduces a New Software to Connect Personally with Residents

This week marks another exciting development for the City of Leeds as they launched an innovative approach to connect with residents, enhance transparency, and improve access to city services. With the introduction of Rep’d, a cutting-edge video messaging and engagement platform designed specifically for local government interactions, residents can pose questions to city staff members and receive brief, personalized video responses. Notifications are promptly sent to residents' inboxes when their questions are answered, ensuring immediate engagement.

The City of Leeds is one of the first municipalities in the southeast to utilize Rep’d. “We’re always looking for ways to connect personally with the Leeds community while keeping residents informed,” said City Administrator Brad Watson. “We’ll be using this tool to ensure everyone in the Leeds community is heard, informed, and has a personal connection to City leadership.”

One of the standout features of this new platform is its simplicity. There’s no need to download an app or log into any software. To participate, residents simply visit the website to submit their questions along with their email address. The questions are then reviewed to identify the most suitable city staff member who will provide a video response. If a question requires a more direct conversation, it will be handled, accordingly. All questions and answers remain on the website so others may view them who might have similar questions. The city will also have the option to share videos on social media to broaden their reach with this information.

In addition to Rep’d, the City of Leeds has introduced other initiatives to boost community communication, such as the Online Services Portal and TextMyGov applications. More innovative tools are on the horizon and will be announced soon. Concurrently, the city is developing a 10-year comprehensive plan, inviting residents to share their visions for Leeds via a survey at https://ImagineLeeds.com.

Residents are encouraged to join the conversation at repd.us/leeds or through the Ask Leeds button on the city website at https://LeedsAlabama.gov.

Kids and their Families Enjoyed July's Outdoor Movie Night!

It was another successful summer event on Friday night as kids and their families gathered in the concrete parking lot in downtown Leeds for our July outdoor movie night. There were plenty of games, a bounce house and food trucks with the featured movie, Trolls Band Together.

This was our second downtown outdoor movie night of the summer compliments of the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Leeds. The movie was compliments of Leeds Redevelopment Authority. Bounce House provided by Leeds Main Street, Leeds First Methodist  provide plenty of popcorn, Mosaic Chapel gave out bottled water, Casey Parsons Team - Guild Mortgage took care of the games, LHS Band Boosters sold jewelry items as a fundraiser and restrooms were provided by Leeds Jane Culbreth Library. Food Trucks were A Dab of This And A Dab of That! and Turner Shaved Ice. Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the evening as we continue to build community and to all of our volunteers! August 2nd will be our last movie night for the summer and a back to school bash so mark your calendars!

Meal Sponsors Needed | Leeds Band Boosters

The Leeds High School Band Boosters has approximately 50% of their meals sponsored for the band. This non-profit organization will need 10 meals to cover the regular football and competition season and we are still looking for sponsors.

We provide drinks, an entree, dessert and a side for 120 people for every game and competition. It is important to feed our band students before away games and competitions. Band students go directly from school to away game preparations so they do not go home and eat. Band Boosters feed them so they have fuel for the game. For competitions, band students have a long day of practice, travel, and performance so these students must have fuel to represent Leeds well. Meal sponsors are also needed for away games during the playoffs, but we don't have those dates yet.

Meals may be sponsored by providing money (and the Band Boosters will order and prepare the meal) or by bringing the meal to the band. More than one person, business, or group can sponsor a meal to share the cost. Sponsors are publicly thanked on our Facebook page and the Band app (for band parents and students).

Thanks so much for your help!!!

The Red Barn

JOY has a BIG announcement: I am very happy to announce that Shannon Horsley will be taking over the position of The Red Barn's Executive Director! Shannon was originally hired for this position in 2012 when the barn began, but shortly after beginning, Shannon's husband was transferred to Mississippi. For the next ten years, Shannon worked part-time remotely until moving back to Birmingham in Spring 2022. This transition has been a long time coming, but was definitely worth the wait because I wanted to make sure the next Executive Director would be someone I could trust to bring stability and sustainability to the organization. Shannon has all of the necessary skills and loves The Red Barn as much as I do! In planning this transition, we patiently waited for all the pieces to fall into place, sought advice from organizational experts, and followed the research from this article about successful founder transitions. As this article points out, 45% of founders stay on successfully as board members, employees, or advisors. Our current plan is for me to remain involved in an unpaid operations role with Shannon as Executive Director. Once we can afford to fill the operations role, we will hire for that position, and I will remain on as board president. This is an exciting time for The Red Barn, as well as me personally. Every founder wants to know that the organization is prepared to continue without them at the helm, so I am incredibly proud that we are making this transition. I have extreme confidence in Shannon and trust that she will make the barn better and better with each passing year of her tenure.
