Leeds Historical Society to Feature Stagecoach Exhibit and Open Museum During 30th Annual Creek Bank Festival

The Leeds Historical Society is proud to announce its participation in the 30th Annual Creek Bank Festival on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Leeds Memorial Park. As part of the celebration, the Society will host an interactive booth featuring a life-size stagecoach replica and will open the Leeds Historical Society Museum at the historic Bass House, located at 1129 Montevallo Road, just steps away from the festival grounds.
Festival goers are invited to visit the Historical Society’s booth to learn about the Ashville to Montevallo Stagecoach Route, an important piece of Alabama’s early transportation and communication history. The booth will offer photo opportunities with the stagecoach replica and feature information about the people, post offices, and communities that developed along this vital 19th-century route—including what is now the City of Leeds.
In addition, the Bass House Museum will be open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, welcoming visitors to explore exhibits on local history, artifacts, and the story of Leeds’ early settlers. Volunteers will be on hand to give brief tours and answer questions about the area’s rich past.
“We’re excited to connect with the community and showcase how Leeds was shaped by the people, places, and movement along this historic route,” said Randy Ray, President of the Leeds Historical Society. “This is a great opportunity to explore our shared history in a fun and interactive way.”
The Creek Bank Festival is a free, family-friendly event featuring live music, food trucks, vendors, and kids’ activities. The Historical Society encourages everyone to stop by the booth, step inside the Bass House, and take a step back in time.

🎤 Meet Our Creek Bank Festival Emcee – Amber Yeackle! 🎤
🎤 Meet Our Creek Bank Festival Emcee – Amber Yeackle! 🎤 We’re thrilled to welcome Amber Yeackle as the emcee for this year’s Creek Bank Festival! A proud resident of downtown Leeds for the past 8 years, Amber has been volunteering with community events from the very beginning. Today, she’s a dedicated board member of Leeds Main Street, helping bring energy and excitement to our city.
A former radio DJ turned “boring office job” worker (her words, not ours! 😉), Amber enjoys the freedom to pursue her many passions—gardening, hiking, and even crawling through caves! 🪴🥾🕳️
But her greatest adventure? Raising her son, Brendan, a 6th grader at Leeds Middle School. Together, they make the most of every moment, exploring life and creating memories.
We’re so lucky to have Amber bring her fun-loving spirit and voice to the Creek Bank stage. Be sure to give her a big wave and hello at the festival! 🎉

Congratulations to Mrs. Leasha Phillips, Teacher of the Year
After an incredible 37-year teaching career—36 of those right here in Leeds—Mrs. Leasha Phillips is retiring as one of the most beloved and impactful educators our community has ever known. Mrs. Phillips was announced as the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year on Thursday, May 15, at the Chamber’s monthly luncheon and was presented with a check for $500. The Teacher of the Year Award was sponsored by Heidelberg Materials. The luncheon was held at First Baptist Church Leeds and was sponsored by Great Beginnings Learning Center LLC.
While she once dreamed of being an opera singer, Leasha’s true calling revealed itself through the “fascination of the learning process.” She’s spent decades shaping little minds in kindergarten, watching with joy as her students grew from tentative learners to bright-eyed readers. What will she miss the most? “The lightbulb moments. The love of reading. The growth from August to May.”
Her favorite classroom story? In her second or third year, a student named Billy Hill had finally earned her trust. She asked him to take books to the library…only to get a call that Billy had walked to the public library—because she didn’t specify which one!
From navigating the transition when Leeds City Schools became its own system, to weathering snowstorms (literally—Superintendent Dr. John Moore once personally drove her and other teachers to their cars during “Snowmageddon”), Leasha has seen it all with grace, wisdom, and a deep love for her students.
Dr. Moore said it best: “With today’s teacher shortage, we’re lucky to have nine applicants for one position when we used to have 400. Teaching has to be in your heart. And with Leasha, you never had to worry about kindergarten. She had it covered.”
The Chamber thanks First Baptist Church Leeds for hosting the luncheon, Mary Beth Lochridge of Leeds City Schools for conducting the interview with Mrs. Phillips at the luncheon, the First Methodist Church Ladies for serving the food, and Wilson Beasley, our chamber diplomat, for assisting at the luncheon.
Shown in the group photos:
