Leeds Girl Scouts Create S.T.E.M. Project for Leeds Jane Culbreth Library
Two girl scouts from the Leeds Girl Scout Troup 30234, under the leadership of Troup Leader Liz Johnson, made a presentation to the Leeds Jane Culbreth Library last Thursday. Girl Scouts Emma Cox and Katelyn Finn took on a project to help them receive the Bronze Award which is the highest award achievable at their level of Juniors in the Girl Scout program. They chose a S.T.E.M. project for the library. S.T.E.M. stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
In the presentation to the library board of directors, Katelyn shared, "My name is Katelyn Finn and this is Emma Cox and we would like to present six Tinker Boxes. I am happy to advise that this project has helped us complete and earn the highest award possible to our level of Juniors in the Girl Scout Program which is the Bronze Award. There are several steps to receiving this award including providing a sustainable, meaningful lasting project for a recipient in the community. We were required to complete at least 20 hours each to go into the project including choosing the project, doing the research required to develop the project, creating the plan, implementing the plan and presenting the final project to the recipient to complete the requirements for the award..."
"We are presenting four Tinker Boxes today which contain assorted hand tools such as screw drivers both standard and ratcheting, assorted types of wrenches, ratchets and assorted types of screws, bolts, nuts, anchors and washers. These tools will be used with these wooden stands that we created to allow the user to learn how these different types of screws and bolts. We created two each of these types of Tinker Boxes including step-by-step instructions on how to use the kits..." Emma shared.

Congratulations, Katelyn and Emma on your accomplishments and to the Leeds Jane Culbreth Library for being the recipient of this wonderful project!
Chamber Member Appreciation Cookout
Last Thursday was the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce Member Appreciation Cookout. This has become an annual event as just one way the Chamber shows appreciation to its membership. ServPro of Birmingham cooked up plenty of hamburgers and hot dogs and the Chamber served a free lunch to over 130 Members and staff that made reservations. "It was a fun, relaxed come and go lunch where some came to eat and hang out while others took “to-go” box lunches back to their offices," said Dona Bonnett, chamber executive board member and owner of adr Business & Marketing Strategies. The Chamber would like to again thank ServPro of Birmingham, Red Diamond SweetRide, First United Methodist Church, their Board of Directors, Ambassadors and all volunteers who made this event possible.
For more information about Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce and how you can become a Member, please contact Sandra McGuire, Executive Director, at 205.965.9392 and visit www.LeedsAreaChamber.com.
Leeds Area Chamber Signs Partnership with Jacksonville State
The Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Jacksonville State University to provide educational opportunities to its members. Beginning this spring, the university will offer a 20 percent corporate tuition scholarship per semester to full-time and part-time workers employed by member organizations of the chamber. The application fee has also been waived.
"Whether a member wants to gain an additional credential or go to college for the first time, we want to help them attain their goals," said President Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. "It's our role to be a good community partner and we are excited to be part of this."
“I attended JSU and marched with the Southerners," said Sandra McGuire, executive director of the chamber. "I met my husband at JSU, and that’s what brought me to Leeds. We are very excited about this partnership and what it will mean to our chamber members and their employees. I think it’s going to be a great program for us!”
The Spring 2023 semester will begin at JSU on Jan. 9. Read full press release at www.leedsareachamber.com.
Leeds Cruising for Toys - A Cruise-In with a Cause
The Leeds 2nd Annual Cruising for Toys event on Saturday was a huge success. This was a joint effort between C & C Motor Company, Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Leeds as a fundraiser to raise money and collect toys for needy children and teens at Christmas. Chris & Christy McCombs donated $500 cash to the cause and organized the event to encourage people to cruise-in and drop in to bring their donations to downtown Leeds. More than 100 special cars, trucks and bikes cruised in, brought their donations and gathered on the street to enjoy a beautiful afternoon up and down Parkway Drive. The winner of the cash drawing made a donation to the cause bringing the total to over $900 in monetary donations and over a thousand toys and bicycles. These donations will go to Leeds Outreach to distribute to needy families to make a difference in the lives of these children.
“We had a great turnout today in Leeds. We would like to thank everyone who came & help make this show successful!! There were so many toys & some money donations. We also want to thank our friends & family for all your help. We appreciate you all.” said Christy McCombs
The chamber of commerce would like to thank Chris & Christy McCombs and their team, chamber and community volunteers, city workers, police department, Leeds Outreach and everyone who participated in this fundraiser. Thank you!
No Shortage of Kids & Fun with Downtown Trick or Treat
The weather was perfect and local businesses were prepared with plenty of candy for Leeds Downtown Trick or Treat on Monday. Business were scattered all up and down Parkway Drive from Sonic to City Hall with many in costume to add to the fun for the kids and their families. Thousands of adults, teens and children lined the streets in their Halloween attire to travel throughout the perimeter for safe trick or treating. People love this event that is always held on Halloween from 3-5 pm unless the holiday falls on a weekend hosted by Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Leeds. This is one way that our business community gives back and build relationships. We would like to thank the chamber, the city, the volunteers and everyone who came out to make this a successful event!
