Leeds Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting Kicked Off the Holiday Season
It was a fabulous evening at Leeds Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting on Thursday night to kick off the Christmas season!! Leeds High School Band entertained us with beautiful Christmas music. Miss Leeds Area Samantha Hennings performed some Dolly Partin Christmas songs, Leeds Mayor David Miller lit the tree. We had other festive events going on with a popcorn station by Leeds Main Street, hot chocolate goodies by Casey Parsons Guild Mortgage, Hot Cider and other goodies along with a selfie station at Leeds Arts Council, Food truck Eugene's Hot Chicken and Chick-fil-A. Leeds Cruising for Toys 2024: Record-Breaking Success to Benefit Local Children
The fourth annual Leeds Cruising for Toys charity event brought the community together in a big way on Saturday, making this year’s gathering the most successful yet. Hosted by C & C Motor Company, the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Leeds, the event featured over 125 specialty cars and car clubs cruising into downtown Leeds to donate toys and monetary gifts for local children in need.
“What an awesome turnout today. We have such a great car show family. We had a record number of toys & raised $1300 for Leeds Outreach Kids for Christmas!!! We want to Thank You all for donating toys & money donations today. We couldn’t do this without you all. Thank you to our family & friends who help us with this event. We truly appreciate all that y’all do for us!! Ronnie Foster for being the BEST DJ in Alabama & always being there for these kiddos & shows. You all are such a Blessing to these Children. Thank you to Sam Sanfilippo with Skidmore Signs with donating the Best Club Award. The Brotherhood Car Club won the Best Club Award with 14 members. We appreciate you all coming out today,” shared Christy McCombs of C & C Motor Company.
Laura Barnes was the owner of the winning ticket for the $500 cash prize redeemed by her daughter. Laura donated the money back to the charitable efforts. Attendees enjoyed strolling through downtown Leeds on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, admiring specialty cars, shopping and dining in downtown establishments. This event not only celebrated the car community, but also supported local businesses, creating a memorable day for all.
The organizers extend their heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the success of Leeds Cruising for Toys. Your kindness and support are making a difference in the lives of local children.
Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce Hosts Brigadier General Jeffrey L. Newton (Ret) As Luncheon Speaker
The Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed Brigadier General Jeffrey L. Newton (Ret), former Director of the Joint Staff for the Alabama National Guard, as the keynote speaker at its monthly luncheon on November 21. Attendees were inspired by General Newton’s insights on veteran-focused initiatives and his extensive military career.
During his presentation, General Newton highlighted key programs supporting veterans and their families, including a $50M Dependent Scholarship Program that provides educational opportunities for the children of veterans. He also discussed Alabama's five state-of-the-art veterans' homes and shared plans for a potential second veterans’ cemetery in North Alabama, which would further honor the service of the state's military personnel.
General Newton emphasized the importance of federal per diem dollars, which help offset costs for operating the veterans' homes, and provided details on eligibility requirements for burial at veterans' cemeteries. He encouraged veterans and their families to pre-register at va.gov to streamline the process.
With a career spanning over four decades, General Newton served in various leadership roles, including deployments in support of Operations ALLIED FORCE, ENDURING FREEDOM, and IRAQI FREEDOM. His numerous accolades include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and induction into the USAF Enlisted Heritage Hall's "Wall of Achievers."

The Leeds Community Chorus Celebrates 30 Years
The Leeds Community Chorus celebrated the chorus' 30th Anniversary with their Holiday Show at Leeds Presbyterian Church on Saturday evening singing a blend of Thanksgiving and Christmas music. It was a festive evening and refreshments were served during an intermission where everyone gathered around in the fellowship hall.
Leeds to Hold Public Hearing on IMAGINE LEEDS Recently Published Comprehensive Plan
IMAGINE Leeds Comprehensive Plan
Mayor David Miller and City Council are pleased to announce that the City of Leeds is nearing completion of the 2024 Comprehensive Plan, “IMAGINE Leeds”. The Comprehensive Plan is an action-oriented city-wide planning process to make Leeds, Alabama, a better place to Live, Work, and Play. It is a plan developed by our citizens for our citizens and addresses a wide variety of issues, including land use, transportation, housing, recreation, and economic development.
The public is encouraged to review the draft version of the plan, which is published on the project website at www.imagineleeds.com, provide comment on the draft version, including topics such as downtown development, future land use, and road connectivity/ improvements and leave their feedback online as soon as possible and prior to a public hearing event open to the general public.
This public hearing event will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12 during the Planning & Zoning Commission meeting at the Leeds City Hall Annex at 1408 9th St, Leeds, AL 35094. Any feedback and comments submitted prior to the public hearing will be incorporated into a final draft for the city’s consideration. At the hearing, members of the community will be able to review the final version of the plan. The planning commission will consider the final plan document at this meeting.
