City of Leeds to Begin Installation of New Traffic Signal at Exit 140

Building on the momentum of recent infrastructure improvements, the City of Leeds is pleased to announce the launch of a new traffic signal installation project at Exit 140, scheduled to begin next week. The new signal will be installed at the end of the I-20 East off-ramp and is designed to significantly improve traffic flow and safety for drivers turning west onto Highway 78 toward The Shops.

This new project follows the successful completion of a full LED lighting upgrade at Exit 140, where all lights have been replaced with modern, energy-efficient fixtures—greatly enhancing nighttime visibility and safety. Together, these improvements reflect the City’s proactive approach to infrastructure development and traffic management.

The intersection at Exit 140 has long been a concern for both residents and visitors due to high traffic volume and the lack of a functioning signal. Leeds Mayor David Miller emphasized the importance of this upcoming project:

“That’s been a trouble spot for quite a while. As you come off of the interstate going east and head toward the outlet mall or Buc-ee’s, you basically take your life in your hands trying to meet one car at a time across that intersection. There were no lights—it was a bad arrangement. Just to let you know, we now have approved funding and we’ll be starting quickly on the new traffic arrangement. This will include a computerized light that makes it a lot easier for us to get a lot of cars across there without people stacking up.”

This signal will not only improve safety, but also enhance access to key destinations such as The Shops at Grand River, a vital retail and economic driver in the area. The City also welcomes continued collaboration with stakeholders from The Shops as this project moves forward.

These upgrades are another milestone in Leeds' ongoing efforts to ensure a safe, efficient, and inviting experience for both residents and visitors alike.
