Leeds Downtown Walking Tour Brings the 1950s to Life in a Spectacular Community Celebration
The spirit of the 1950s came alive in downtown Leeds this past Saturday as the city hosted its most successful Leeds Trails and Tours Walking Tour to date. With an estimated 1,000 people attending the vibrant day of festivities—double last year’s turnout—the community gathered to stroll through time and celebrate a decade known for poodle skirts, classic tunes, and hometown pride.
Themed “Decade of the 1950s”, this year’s walking tour was a resounding success, thanks to the tireless efforts of over 145 dedicated volunteers and the support of local businesses, city partners, and residents. From the lively reenactments and vintage costuming to the bustling Market on Main and Southern Market, the event created a living history experience that brought smiles, sparked conversations, and boosted local commerce.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the leadership team that anchored the event: Ronald Howard, 2025 Team Lead, and Ken Nelms, Vice Chair, whose energy and vision made it all possible. The event was further strengthened by an outstanding executive committee: Dona Bonnett, Linda Miller, Eddie Moore, Teresa Simmons, Ronald Eagan, Debbie Moore, Susan Nelms, Donna Tharp Jones, Amy Lee, Jacob Meyer, Judy Ray, Debbie Childers, and Dell Harding Smith.
Special appreciation is extended to the City of Leeds, especially the Public Works Department, and to State Representative Susan DuBose for their essential support in bringing this beloved event to life.
While the numbers tell a story of growth and community enthusiasm, the true highlight was the joy shared across generations. Visitors and locals alike reconnected with history, explored downtown shops, and made lasting memories.
Plans are already in motion for next year’s walk, and the organizing team invites community members to share their stories, feedback, and ideas. With momentum like this, 2026 is shaping up to be even more unforgettable.

City of Leeds and Chamber of Commerce Celebrate Ribbon Cutting for 49th & Magnolia
The City of Leeds and the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce proudly celebrated the grand opening of 49th & Magnolia with an official ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, April 11, 2025. Leeds Mayor David Miller had the honor of cutting the ribbon alongside store owners Kenneth and Joanie Davis, surrounded by a host of Chamber Board Members, local business professionals, and community supporters.
Mayor Miller shared his enthusiasm:
“What a gorgeous store! Welcome to Leeds. I think you’ve chosen a great location, and I believe you’re going to do very well here. We’re excited to have you—welcome aboard!”
Located at 1625 Ashville Road, this new retailer offers a fresh take on home décor, furniture, and design—blending organic elements with modern rustic and transitional styles. 49th & Magnolia is more than just a furniture store; it's a curated destination for those looking to create a unique, cozy, and elegant home space.
Store owner Joanie Davis reflected on her local roots and journey into retail:
“I’m originally from Irondale, but my family has had a presence in Leeds for a long time. My parents moved their trucking business here in 1987, and we relocated in 1991. We’ve lived here ever since. My husband went to school in Leeds and is a lifelong resident. I’m an accountant by trade, but after years in that field, I was ready for a change—and that’s what led me here to open 49th & Magnolia.”
Founded in August 2024, 49th & Magnolia was born from the Davises' passion for design, quality craftsmanship, and sustainable living. Every item in the store is hand-selected for its beauty, functionality, and character—ranging from reclaimed wood pieces to plush textiles and statement décor.
“We’re thrilled to have 49th & Magnolia here in Leeds,” said Amy Lee, Executive Director of the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce. “This shop brings a fresh energy and style to our community, and we’re excited to see them thrive.”
Leeds Historical Society Invites Public to Celebrate 138th Birthday of the City of Leeds
The Leeds Historical Society is pleased to invite the community to a special celebration marking the 138th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Leeds, which officially became a town on April 27, 1887.
The event will take place on Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Leeds Historical Society Museum, located at the J.W. Bass House, 1129 Montevallo Road, Leeds, AL 35094.
This family-friendly celebration will honor the city’s rich heritage and the generations of citizens who have shaped its story. Guests will enjoy:
- Guided tours of the Bass House Museum
- Special displays highlighting Leeds history
- A brief program recognizing community partners and supporters
- Light refreshments on the grounds
The celebration also provides an opportunity to thank the City of Leeds for their recent support in upgrading the museum’s infrastructure, including the replacement of the HVAC system — a key improvement in preserving the city's treasured history.
“We’re proud to celebrate Leeds’ past while continuing to preserve its legacy for future generations,” said Randy Ray, President of the Leeds Historical Society. “This is a great chance for residents and visitors alike to connect with the stories that make Leeds a unique and vibrant place.”
The Leeds Historical Society encourages everyone to stop by, bring a friend, and help honor 138 years of community, progress, and pride.
